Kwun Tong Footbridge
My 11 square foot garden (一人一花园)
Client: Government of Hong Kong SAR
Size: 0.5 km
Location: Kwun Tong, Hong Kong
Everyone grows their piece of garden, which collectively forms the bridge of our city.
Idea - Most family in the crowded Kwun Tong district does not have the luxury to have space for a home garden. Why don’t take a piece from our public footbridge and garden on it.
How it works - The cladding of the footbridge is divided into 1 meter square parcels. The public apply for a piece for free and grows plants on it with their own choice. The public is responsible for maintaining it. Irresponsible owner would lose their right of growing and the space would be released to other applicants on the line.
The beauty of it – The footbridge becomes a public showcase for the community. It is a collective art of the district.
Environmental performance - Panels with different degree of openings respond to the bridge’s orientation to provide shadings and views.
